The Taliban took part in a meeting in the Russian capital, Moscow. This was the Taliban’s participation in a major international meeting since taking control of Afghanistan last August. Another 10 countries took part in the meeting.

The countries participating in the meeting called for urgent humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan. In addition, countries that have recently withdrawn troops from Afghanistan have been asked to raise funds to rebuild the country.

A joint statement issued by the countries participating in the Moscow talks on Wednesday said they were concerned about the activities of the terrorist group. They are also reiterating their commitment to security in Afghanistan in order to maintain regional stability.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized US officials for not attending the meeting. He had earlier said that the void created by the security situation in Afghanistan was being exploited by IS and al-Qaeda militants.

Before attending the Moscow meeting, the Taliban delegation met with European Union and US officials. They then visited Turkey for official recognition.

The Taliban delegation is led by Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi. He called for the recognition of the Taliban government and said that the separation of Afghanistan was not in the interest of any party. This has been proven in the past.

Zamir Kabulov, the Kremlin’s ambassador to Afghanistan, said official recognition would come only if the Taliban met expectations for human rights and inclusive rule.
Russia’s words were also reflected in the joint statement. The participating countries called on the Taliban to pursue a moderate policy of internal and external policy and to adopt a friendly policy towards its neighbors.

In domestic policy, the Taliban is called upon to respect the rights of minorities, women and children.
