The Cabinet Division has sought to know the progress of the investigation into the misappropriation of Tk 19 crore in the vault of the Gulshan branch adjacent to the head office of the private sector Union Bank. The Cabinet Division has sent a letter to the Financial Institutions Division of the Finance Ministry on October 13. Now the Financial Institutions Department will take the information from Bangladesh Bank and send it to the Cabinet Division.
According to a letter from the Cabinet Division, the Daily Prothom Alo reported on October 8 that the investigation into the mismatch of money in the vault was not over. Although the branch documents said that there was Rs 31 crore in the vault, the central bank officials got Rs 12 crore. The branch officials could not give a correct answer to the central bank’s inspection team about the remaining deficit of Tk 19 crore. The central bank has assigned Union Bank to investigate the matter. It was requested to inform the Cabinet Division about the latest progress.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank has not yet collected CCTV footage of the incident. Union Bank has been forced to investigate without taking any action. The managing director of the Islamic bank is not commenting on this.
