One of the top leaders of the international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda has been killed in a US drone strike in Syria. His name is Abdul Hamid Al-Matar. The Pentagon made the claim on Friday.
Two days ago, a military base in southern Syria was attacked, the AFP news agency reported. The US-led military alliance used the base to fight the international terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a U.S. military base.
A spokesman for the US Central Command, Major John Rigsby, claimed in a statement on Friday that a senior US al-Qaeda leader had been killed in a US drone strike in northwestern Syria today.
Claiming that no one else was killed in the attack, Major John Rigsby said the attack was carried out with an MQ-9 drone. He said the killing of al-Qaeda’s top leader would reduce the terrorist group’s ability to carry out further attacks and carry out global attacks.
The Pentagon says Salim Abu-Ahmad, a senior al-Qaida commander in Syria, was assassinated in late September. He was killed in a US drone strike near the northwestern city of Idlib.
The U.S. Central Command said in a statement that it was responsible for planning, authorizing and raising funds for al Qaeda-linked terrorist attacks in the region.
“Al-Qaeda continues to threaten the United States and our allies,” said John Rigsby. Al-Qaeda is using Syria as a safe haven to reorganize itself, coordinate with foreign allies and plan attacks outside Syria.
