The list of candidates is scheduled to be finalized at a meeting of the party’s local government nomination board at the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganobhaban on Sunday.

On October 14, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the third phase of 10 Raipur Upazila and 10 Ramganj UP elections. According to the schedule, voting will take place on November 28. Meanwhile, the opinion of the grassroots was not taken for the election of the UP chairman candidate in the district this time. The grassroots leaders and workers of Awami League are angry over this.

Six potential chairman candidates from Raipur and Ramganj said the center has instructions to finalize candidates for the post of chairman in consultation with grassroots opinion or union committee leaders and send the list to the center. The list of chairman candidates was finalized by an extended meeting in the last union elections. The mayoral election of the municipality held in December and January was also finalized by an extended meeting. But this time the extended meeting and no opinion of the grassroots was taken. Union Awami League President-General Secretary and Upazila Awami League President-General Secretary finalized the list. The grassroots leaders and activists of the party are angry about this.

Mojibul Haque, the current chairman of the Karpara union in Ramganj and president of the union Awami League, said grassroots views were not taken into account in the screening of Awami League chairman candidates. No such discussion was held with him. The president-general secretary of the upazila Awami League has made a list of them and submitted it to the center.

Rakibul Hasan, another candidate from Chandipur UP in Ramganj, said, “I was by the side of the leaders and workers during the distant time of the party. Leaders and workers are also with me. I am staying in Dhaka and informing the central leaders.

Mojibul Haque, the current chairman of Karpara UP in Ramganj, said he was also in Dhaka. Trying to get nominated again.

Rafiq Char Mohana UP current chairman Safiq Pathan said, ‘I have been in Dhaka for the last six days. I hope the party will nominate me.

According to 10 workers of different organizations of the party, most of the leaders and workers of the party are in favor of one or the other candidate. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. For the last time they are silent now. Everyone is looking at the decision of the center.

When asked, district Awami League president Mia Golam Faruk said, “There are more than 150 Awami League leaders in Raipur and Ramganj aspiring for the post of chairman.” They are putting up posters and banners in different wards to announce their possible candidatures. Potential candidates and their supporters are campaigning on social media. A list of 120 names from the district committee has been sent to the center. They are all staying in Dhaka now. Now everyone is waiting for the decision of the center. The final name will be announced from the center within two days.

BNP is not in the field
This time BNP has no interest in union elections. As a reason, district BNP member secretary and former mayor of Laxmipur municipality Sahabuddin told Prothom Alo that the vote was held the night before. Leaders and workers have to leave the area before voting. So no one is interested in taking part in the election.
