‘Disco Dancer’ maker B Subhash’s wife Tillottimma Babbar has been keeping very unwell. Down with a renal and lung problem both, she is currently in Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. The ‘Disco Dancer’ maker talks about his hardships and her health- both of which have hit him hard. It might have been just about okay till now with external aid arriving, but the water has now come up to the neck as far as expenses are concerned.

Excerpts from the conversation:

Extremely sorry to hear about your wife. When did the ordeal begin?

Tillottimma has had a problem of high blood pressure since several years. Blood pressure and diabetes are the root cause of kidney failure. About 5 years ago, both her kidneys failed and she has been on dialysis 4 times a week. She is also suffering from Interstitial Lung Disease for which she was admitted recently for 25 days in the ICU. She was on a ventilator. The doctors had told us that her condition is critical but she, being a very strong lady, fought back and survived. But now, she has been admitted again.

Is she responding to treatment? Talking? Recognising?

It’s a long road to recovery for her but she’s a strong-willed lady.

What are the doctors saying now?

Her doctors call her ‘The Iron Lady’ as she has survived on the ventilator not once but twice.

How are you managing? Who stays in the hospital at night?

Our two daughters, Malveika and Swetha and son Aaishwaryaa are my wife’s biggest strength and they are taking very good care of her. In the daytime, the children divide the time amongst themselves. At night, I stay back in the hospital.

Has anybody come forward to help?

My daughter Swetha has approached many colleagues of mine from the film industry for their financial aid and support- and along with their good wishes and blessings, they have helped my wife. Name it, Juhi Chawla, Dimple Kapadia, Anil Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Bhushan Kumar, Ratan Jain and most importantly Komal Nahta and Salman Khan helped my wife five years ago when she underwent dialysis. I am grateful to all my friends who stood by me with financial aid in my very difficult time and wish well for my wife and bless her

How did the financial stress set in?

Some of my films didn’t do well at the box-office, which was a very big setback for me financially and career wise. Also the dynamics of the younger generation in the industry have completely changed. They opt to work with corporates, big studios and younger directors and technicians- which leaves filmmakers like me in a dilemma. Nonetheless, even at the age of 77, I am very creative; filmmaking is my passion.

My daughter Swetha has registered with Ketto for crowd-funding for my wife’s hospitalization and further treatments. My family and I thank all those who’ve donated till now for their contribution in support of my wife and I request more people to come forward at this difficult time for my wife, it’s my very humble request to all my fans, friends and well wishers.

Salman Khan helped me five years ago when my wife began her dialysis. Bhushan Kumar, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla and many friends from the industry supported me during her last stay in the hospital, which I told you was for 25 days, on the request of my daughter Swetha.

And during her recent hospitalisation?

During her recent hospitalisation, Anil Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty have come forward. But my wife’s medical expenses are continuously ongoing and the treatment is very costly.
