Weeks after Kangana Ranaut created an uproar over her remark that India’s Independence in 1947 was ‘bheekh’ (alms), an Agra-based lawyer has filed a petition seeking legal action.

The court of chief judicial magistrate is expected to hear the petitioner Ramashankar Sharma on December 15, but according to the latest reports, the lawyer is already facing flack from political groups. It has been reported that Sharma has been slammed for mentioning the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his petition against Kangana.

The petitioner allegedly named the PM for the “inaction” on the part of the central government to correct Ranaut for her statement.

According to reports on IndiaToday.com Sharma, the president of Agra’s Rajiv Gandhi Bar Association moved the court on November 23 claiming that Ranaut ridiculed freedom fighters and Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of non-violence. He also named BJP leader Pragya Thakur in his petition alleging that she insulted Mahatma Gandhi and sought against her.

In the report, Vijay Upadhyay claimed that it was not “appropriate” to name the prime minister in a petition filed in the court. He said, “The statement made by Kangana Ranaut could, in fact, be called an insult to the freedom fighters. To file a case against Kangana is understandable, but it is the duty of every Indian to respect the dignity of the post of prime minister.”

Hindustan Biradari vice-chairman Vishal Sharma claimed that the petitioner was trying to highlight his case by naming the PM in his petition.

However, Congress leader Shabbir Abbas defended the petitioner saying, that Kangana’s ‘ignorant talk’ was an insult to freedom fighters and Mahatma Gandhi. “The step taken by advocate Ramashankar is right.”
