As the world is consciously ditching the love for sugar, there has been a rise in the production as well as sale of low-sugar or sugar-free foods, which may seem like a healthy option to go for, but are they really good? Sugar-free foods are created with sugar alcohols like sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol. Sugar alcohols are lab-created to be sweet in taste, which are not absorbed in the bloodstream. This means you can enjoy the sweet taste without adding on the calories. They don’t spike sugar levels, but may often lead to an upset stomach or cause diarrhea. However, experts advise to take sugar-free foods in moderation. Apart from that, a compound called Aspartame commonly used as an alternative to sugar in foods, candies and beverages increases the risk of cancer as per studies. In fact, this artificial non-saccharide sweetener is 200 times sweeter than sucrose.
