Women’s bodies have been under the social lens since times immemorial and they have been shamed for exposing certain ‘body parts’ that have been sexualized for eons. The breasts are the most sexualized parts of a woman’s body and contradictorily enough, have been used time and again to appeal to the public eye even though they’re associated with shame and covering up. Breastfeeding, even though a natural process that is beautiful and essential to life, has been surrounded by stigma more so in the modern day. A child can get cranky and hungry in the middle of a public place or in a crowded room of a small house which leaves the mother with no option but to feed it there. In addition to this, factors such as illness, disease and poverty leave little room for private spaces where children can be fed. Instead of understanding the plight of such mothers and their children, people prefer to police them. However, women have stood up against the shame, literally and metaphorically and have openly challenged these notions in their small ways. Here are five celebrities who refused to wear the badge of shame for being mothers or women.
