There is no doubt about the fact that the Harry Potter book series is one of the greatest pieces of literature that the modern world has seen. Be it the unforgettable characters, fantastical creatures, or mystical settings – all managed to successfully amaze us over decades. Later, when the books were adapted into movies, they managed to reach audiences all across the globe. While the main characters get enough screen time in all movies, several minor yet important characters don’t even get a space in them. Thus, here is a look at the major characters in the Harry Potter books who didn’t appear in movies.

1. Ludo Bagman
In ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, Bagman plays an important role in both organizing and announcing the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament. However, in the movie adaptation, it is Cornelius Fudge who announces the Quidditch World Cup, and Dumbledore instead gives instructions to the Triwizard champions before each task.

2. Charlie Weasley
It was bad enough already that Bill Weasley played a much smaller role in the films as compared to the books. In addition, Charlie didn’t make an appearance at all. It would have been great if he was given some space in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ during some of the scenes for the first task of the Triwizard Tournament.

3. Peeves
Although there are many ghosts in the Hogwarts castle, Peeves the poltergeist is the most important one. The mischief-making ghost can always be counted on to cause trouble for students and teachers alike. Even though he doesn’t have an essential role in the plot, but it’s odd to see Hogwarts on screen without his presence. In the books, he spreads rumors about Harry being the heir of Slytherin, reveals Sirius Black has infiltrated the castle, and joins Fred and George Weasley to terrorize Dolores Umbridge.

4. Frank and Alice Longbottom
As mentioned in the books and movies, Neville’s parents are tortured with the Cruciatus curse by the Death Eaters. In the movies, it is implied that they die, while they appear in the movies when Ron, Harry, and Hermione go to visit Arthur Weasley in St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. However, they don’t appear at all in the films.

5. Winky

Winky the house-elf first appears at the Quidditch World Cup where is she is fired by Barty Crouch Sr., prompting Hermione to take up a crusade for house-elf rights. Winky later turns up at Hogwarts, falling into depression and dropping a series of hints about the Crouches. It’s eventually revealed that Winky was tasked with caring for Crouch Jr., a convicted Death Eater who was broken out of Azkaban and kept hidden by his father.

6. The Gaunts
During the sixth book, ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, Harry and Dumbledore explore Voldemort’s heritage, childhood, and adolescence. But in the film, pretty much every piece of Voldemort’s family background and early years is left out. This means that the tale of Voldemort’s maternal ancestors, the Gaunts, has remained a mystery for anyone who hasn’t read the books.

7. Andromeda and Ted Tonks
Nymphadora Tonks’s parents played a role in helping the Order of the Phoenix in the movies, but they are both cut out of the films. Andromeda Tonks is the sister of Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy, who married the muggle-born Ted Tonks and was disowned by her family. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow, Harry and Hagrid escape to the Tonks house before taking a portkey to the Burrow, but in the movies, they go directly to the Weasley family house upon their escape from Voldemort.
