Former Miss India Ankita Shorey is the new fashionista in town. She has been stealing the spotlight these days with her exquisite and quirky style. Be it traditional or contemporary dresses, Ankita knows how to up the fashion ante. In an exclusive interaction with The Times of India, ETimes, she doles out her style and skincare secrets. Here’s an excerpt from the interview.

How has your style evolved from your Miss India days to what you wear today?

AS: That time I was still exploring myself and looked out for validation. Now I don’t lookout for any validation and I am more sure, rooted and confident about my style. I have evolved and I only wear things that I know I can pull off well and not because I saw someone else wearing it. It’s extremely important to be able to carry off anything you wear with a lot of ease or else you end up making a fool out of yourself. In the past, I have had those moments.

So I know what looks good on me and that’s what I wear.

What do you keep in mind before dressing up for an event?

AS: I like to experiment with my looks depending on my mood and I am not scared of trolls. For me, it’s about connecting with the peeps of my generation. Even when I was in a wheelchair, I used to try my best to dress up nicely and attend any wedding or function. You have to be comfortable in what you wear and you have to like yourself. You can’t have the whole world by your side.

Any international celebrity you look up to when it comes to style?

AS: I admire Hailey Baldwin. I quite relate to her style. I also love Kendall Jenner and Dua Lipa.

We see that there is a sudden resurgence of the nineties and noughties trend. Are you also following them?

AS: I see the international stars following all the nineties and noughties trends. I don’t follow trends. I have the eye for any look and very strangely, eventually ends up being trending. So I feel sometimes I am always in sync with the latest trends. I had the audience divided with my looks. When you start out a particular trend that you might face wrath or setbacks but later you get applauded for it.

Are you a street style person or a gown person?

AS: I don’t have a favourite. I am all about experimenting with different looks. I can wear whatever looks good on me. I am also a sneakerhead. I have a huge collection of sneakers. I perfer sneakers to heels.

Your Indo-western look from Ankita Lokhande’s sangeet got talked about. How did you decide on the look?

AS: For Sangeet, I wanted to try something different and have fun. So I picked up this denim skirt and jacket with Jaipuri work on it and I teamed it with sneakers and gladiators attached to it.

Who is your go-to designer?

AS: I love Dior, Chanel and LV. I have a lot of stuff from Dior. I like the classy appeal that it has. And if I want something colourful and quirky, I would go for Gucci. I also love Manish Malhotra and his recent sequin collection is something I am in love with.
