WASHINGTON: Behind every successful man is a strong woman: if any illustration is needed for the saying, then there was a vivid demonstration of it during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night, when two strong women — vice-president Kamala Harris and House speaker Nancy Pelosi — flanked him.
Both from California, they are number 2 and number 3 respectively in the Presidential line of succession. To complete the picture of the women in the Biden era, the “designated survivor” for the State of the Union — a standard practice where an official is kept away at a safe, undisclosed location just in case of an attack that decimates the entire top leadership — was also a woman: commerce secretary Gina Raimondo.
Pelosi, who tore up former President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on a previous occasion, attracted wide attention with her cheerleading the Biden speech.
Women took centerstage on the Republican side too. Two far-right GOP lawmakers, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene, shouted “build the wall” in response to Biden’s remarks on immigration, prompting a Democratic lawmaker to holler, “Sit down!”
Women lawmakers constitute about 25 per cent of the Senate and Congress — the highest in US history — and their rise, mostly in Democratic Party, has discomfited many white male chauvinists. Remarks online about Harris and Pelosi seated behind Biden included comments on their age, looks, skin etc.
“Can’t really pinpoint what was more nauseating. The blinking dummy blathering like an idiot? Watching Pelosi sucking on her dentures? or Harris sitting there bobbing her wrinkled neck up & down looking like a washed-up hooker,” read one tweet.
Democrats lashed back too. “Women Making History Month vs Crazy Screaming Banshee Month,” anti-Trump commentator Ana Navarro-Cárdenas tweeted, with a photo of Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene below that of Harris and Pelosi. The two GOP extremist lawmakers spent much time and energy during Biden’s speech interrupting him and making faces.
